Key & BPM Detector
What to do with your key and BPM
Knowing the key and tempo makes it much easier to build around a beat, tune an 808, match samples and line up loops. This detector is made with modern bass-heavy music in mind, including trap, rage, hip-hop and similar styles where the rhythm or harmony can be a little harder for a basic BPM or key finder to read.
Why does trap sometimes show two BPM values?
Trap is often counted in half-time or double-time. A beat at 75 BPM can also be counted as 150 BPM without the music actually speeding up. If you see an ×2 or ½ tempo, both values describe the same underlying groove. Use whichever one matches the way your DAW, loop or project is set up.
Use the key as a strong starting point
The key result is the detector’s most likely tonal centre and major/minor match. Some trap and rage beats use chromatic notes, detuned samples, pitch bends or modal melodies, so not every note has to sit perfectly inside one major or minor scale. If the result says the mode is less certain, the root note can still be very useful for tuning bass and 808s.
- 808s: start by tuning the 808 to the detected root note, then use other notes from the scale when the bass line moves.
- Samples: matching a sample’s key can help it sit with the melody without sounding accidentally dissonant.
- Loops: use the BPM result to time-stretch drum or melody loops before you start chopping them.
- Unusual beats: if a track sounds intentionally dark or tense, accidentals and notes outside the main scale may be part of the sound rather than a detection error.

Once you know the key and BPM, you can keep working on the sound with the tools below. Tune an 808 to the track, check loudness in LUFS, mangle a sample, convert a WAV to MP3, or browse more sounds for your next beat.
Tip: for the most reliable key and BPM detection, use a full song or a section that contains both the main musical idea and drums. Very short intros, breakdowns or heavily changing arrangements can be harder to analyse.
